Sinulog: Mother of all Fiestas

Sinulog: One Beat, One Dance, One Vision

'Sinulog' comes from the Cebuano adverb sulog which is "like water current movement," which proficiently describes the forward-backward movement of the Sinulog dance. Traditionally, the dance consists of two steps forward and one step backward, done to the sound of the drums. The dance is classified into Sinulog-base, Free-Interpretation, and recently a Latin Category, which most people have argued that it had nothing to do with Sinulog tradition. Candle vendors at the Basilica continue to perform the traditional version of the dance when lighting a candle for the customer, usually accompanied by songs in the native language.

The New South Bus Terminal

The newly renovated Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT), which was opened only last month, is supposed to give passengers ease and convenience in taking buses plying the southern Cebu routes. The Cebu Provincial Government hopes to generate revenues coming to P50 million from the CSBT in 2010. Such revenue will come from stall rentals, bus terminal fees, and the P5 entrance fee charged to passengers.
With the opening of the world-class, hi-tech, and air-conditioned terminal, CSBT Administrator Byron Garcia said passengers are assured of secure and convenient travel, minus overcrowding and fear of pickpockets because of the presence of security men in the terminal.

BRT or LRT? What can you say? Do you think these two can help our city?
A study on the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) System in Metro Cebu will be presented this week by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) to Cebu officials.
Mayor-on-leave Tomas Osmeña earlier expressed his apprehension with the proposal presented to him by the DoTC, adding that he was not consulted during the project’s conceptualization.
According to Philstar.com, however, the project proponents could still persuade Osmeña that the project could be beneficial to all Cebuanos. DOTC Undersecretary for Railways Guiling Mamondiong said that he is ready to talk with Osmeña about the project's feasibility. The meeting will be facilitated by the City Planning and Development Coordinating Office (CPDO) head Engineer Nigel Paul Villarete.
Osmena reportedly favors the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) over the LRT idea because it’s cheaper and could solve the Cebu City traffic problem.  “The project will cost $600 million or about P30 billion. Who will pay this? The Cebuanos of course. Do you think some outsider will come to Cebu and spend P30 billion because they love us?” he asked.
Mamondiong said that the BRT and LRT projects will complement each other. According to a Manila Bulletin report, the LRT’s phase 1 will have 19 stations covering cities of  Talisay, Cebu and Mandaue. The said stations will include Osmeña Boulevard, Escario Street, and Gorrordo.

BEST Delicacies/Food in CEBU

F
easting on the famed Cebu Lechon has already been included in my itinerary the very moment I got hold of my plane ticket. Many would say visiting Cebu will never be complete without visiting the Magellan’s Cross. But I must say your Cebu dining experience will never be complete without tasting the Cebuano Lechon.

C
hicharon is one of the food specialty in Cebu aside from Lechon manok and Lechon baboy . Chicharon is made from the skin of a pig. The fat part of a pig is boiled in its own oil in high temperature for several minutes. It taste good especially if you dip some vinegar or soy sauce in it. In Cebu, the Chicharon is made in Carcar Cebu. They have the best Chiharon.

Fancy eating something sweet and healthy? You might as well try Cebu's dried mangoes. The best tasting dried mangoes in the country, if not the world. This ripe, sun dried mangoes is good for snacks and desserts. It has a chewy consistency that makes its taste linger in your mouth.

N
obody knows where the word puso comes from. In the Tagalog language, puso means "heart." But this puso we're talking about is food. It is pronounced as pusô. It is rice wrapped in coconut leaves shaped like a diamond. At least that's what it looks like to me.

University of Cebu

From a modest start in 1964, the Cebu College of Commerce (CCC) of old has come a long way. Beginning with a handful of enrollees, what used to be an undersized college has succesfully evolved into a world-class university in Asia Pacific, while holding true to its philantropic mantra, "NO TUITION FEE INCREASE".

With forty-two (42) years of quality education, the University of Cebu (UC) has been awarded a Deregulated status by the Commision on Higher Education (CHED), while recognized by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commision on Accreditation (PACUCOA) as a learning institution with the most accredited programs.

Currently, UC is cultivating more than 42,000 promising young minds while producing board topnotchers through its four campuses that are conveniently situated within different parts of Cebu.

Cebu Normal University

Cebu Normal University was established in 1915 as a provincial normal school, a branch of the Philippine Normal University. It became an independent institution in 1924, a chartered college in 1976, and a university in 1998. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Cebu.

CNU has three campuses, the main campus in Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City and two extension campuses in Medellin and Balamban.

KAWASAN FALLS

Kawasan Falls is situated in Badian, Cebu about 11 kilometers south of Moalboal, Cebu. This is about 2 hours drive from Cebu City, depending on traffic and the time of day you are traveling. It is an excellent place to have a picnic lunch, explore the falls and go swimming.

BEST in CEBU

Like many Philippine cities, CEBU , nicknamed the "Queen City of the South", has become something of an urban nightmare in recent decades, with jeepneys taking over the inadequate road network. There's history and architecture in there somewhere, but you have to look hard for it among the clutter, the exhaust fumes and the malls. The good news is that it's not half as bad as Manila. It's possible to get from one side of the city to the other in less than thirty minutes and the excellent airport and ferry connections might make you want to consider using Cebu as your base.
CEBU has everything the world can offer: hotels, resorts, beaches, schools, and most especially the friendly people of Cebu.
